Plainview Water District Projects

Since 2017, the Plainview Water District (PWD) has been developing and installing treatment systems to help rid the water supply of the emerging contaminant 1,4-dioxane. The District never stops working for its residents in an effort to provide the highest quality drinking water. With the direction of the Board of Commissioners and implementation of daily operations by the Superintendent, Business Manager, and staff, the PWD has six advanced oxidation process (AOP) treatment systems online in order to treat for 1,4-dioxane. Here are snap shots and additional details of the projects the District has undertaken over the last few years.

July 2023

The PWD held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil the newly completed, state-of- the-art treatment facility that was specifically designed to remove emerging contaminants such as 1,4-dioxane, PFOA and PFOS from the community’s drinking water. Plant 2, located on Donna Drive, represents a $4.2 million investment into the community’s drinking water infrastructure that is capable of producing up to two million gallons of high-quality drinking water each and every day.

May 2023

Construction continues at our Plant 4 site located along Southern Parkway. Concrete foundation for the building has been placed, which allows the construction of the facility to begin. Once completed, Plant 4 will be home to a new state-of-the-art AOP, GAC, nitrate and perchlorate treatment facility.

April 2023

Significant progress has been made towards building out our Plant 5 treatment facility located on Haypath Road! Two Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) vessels were lifted into place at Plant 5 and are in the process of being piped together.

April 2023

PWD broke ground at Plant 4 located along Southern Parkway. This facility, which will be the first of its kind in the region to possess this specific treatment train is designed to remove nitrates, perchlorates, 1,4 dioxane and PFOS. This project is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

March 2023

Another milestone event took place as part of Plainview Water District’s (PWD) continuous efforts to deliver the highest quality water to the community. Our Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) treatment equipment was lifted into place at Plant 5 located on Haypath Road. This AOP treatment is used to improve water quality and address emerging contaminants, specifically 1,4 dioxane.

August 2022

Since construction started in November 2021, the Plainview Water District (PWD) has been working aggressively to construct a year-round treatment facility to continue to treat for emerging contaminants at its Plant 2 site on Donna Drive in Plainview. Throughout the summer, the District, its contractors, and engineers have made significant progress on the building, with all of its components nearing completion.

February 2022

The PWD begins construction on a new, state-of-the-art treatment facility at its water production site located on Donna Drive in Plainview. This new facility will house treatment equipment necessary for the removal of 1,4-dioxane, PFOA, and PFOS from the groundwater, including an AOP system and GAC filters.

August 2021

The sixth AOP system is operational at Plant 3, which leads Long Island water providers with the most AOP systems in operation. This Plant 3 facility can produce up to two million gallons of water per day.

April 2021

The PWD hosts a ribbon-cutting ceremony for our new state of the art treatment facility at Plant 1. In addition, Plant 7 also received NYSDOH authorization, making it the fifth AOP treatment facility to come online.

November 2020

Plainview’s first AOP system is brought online after construction is completed at Plant 2. Even through a pandemic, the PWD continued construction and remained on schedule with all projects for the removal of 1,4-dioxane.

October 2020

Construction is completed and the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) has authorized Plant 1 to begin distributing water to the public.

September 2020

The PWD has received NYSDOH approval to operate the AOP facility at Plant 2. The District becomes one of the first water providers in Nassau County to receive approval for a 1,4-dioxane treatment facility.

January 2020

PWD continues AOP construction at Plants 2, 3, and 7. Our action plan is in full force to treat for emerging contaminants and deliver high quality water to our residents.

December 2019

PWD is awarded $3.67 million in grant funding from EFC for Plant 2 interim and permanent AOP treatment. This funding will assist to provide necessary treatment to keep our water absent of 1,4-dioxane.

November 2019

PWD begins construction on the permanent volatile organic compounds (VOC) and AOP facility at Plant 1. This facility consists of 2 groundwater wells with a combined capacity of up to 3.5 million gallons per day of quality drinking water, free from 1,4-dioxane.

July 2019

PWD receives $2.1 million in grant funding for Plant 1 VOC/AOP treatment facility and $19,600 for the emerging contaminants planning grant from the EFC.

January 2019

PWD commenced litigation against chemical manufacturers to hold them accountable for the 1,4-dioxane into the local water supply. The residents of Plainview-Old Bethpage should not be responsible for shouldering the cost of the contamination these companies are responsible for. The District is actively pursuing the litigation.

October 2018

PWD receives $369k in grant funding from the Stony Brook Center for Clean Water Technology. This pilot study analyzed two different types of treatment systems for the removal of 1,4-dioxane. At this time, 1,4-dioxane was considered an unregulated contaminant.

May 2018

PWD applies for New York State grant funding aimed at providing treatment systems for the removal of 1,4-dioxane from the drinking water well in advance of any regulations. To date, the District has received nearly $9 million in grants.

October 2017

PWD is awarded our first of many grants for $2.63 million from the Environmental Facilities Corporation (EFC) for Plant 4 Nitrate/Perchlorate treatment facility. Construction of this facility was temporarily put on hold to refocus efforts on emerging contaminant treatment. The facility, now with the additional 1,4-dioxane treatment, is currently in the design phase and is expected to break ground in Spring 2022.

The Plainview Water District is constantly working towards and developing new projects to ensure high quality drinking water for our residents. Here are some ongoing capital improvement projects in the works for 2021 and through 2022.
