District Encourages Residents to Prioritize Hydration and Use Water Wisely During Periods of Extreme Temperatures
As Long Island experiences periods of extreme summer heat, the Plainview Water District (PWD) is reminding residents of the important role water plays in helping families stay comfortable, hydrated and mindful of their water use. Through its ongoing Preserve Plainview initiative, the District is sharing practical tips to help residents make the most of every drop while managing increased water needs during the hottest days of the year.
“During heat waves, water becomes an even more important part of our daily routines,” said PWD Commissioner Marc Laykind. “Whether you’re spending time outdoors, exercising, working in the yard or simply trying to stay comfortable at home, staying hydrated should be a priority. Taking simple steps to drink water regularly throughout the day can help residents feel their best during periods of extreme heat.”
Hot weather often leads to increased water use both indoors and outdoors. While hydration is essential, residents can also help protect local water resources by using water efficiently and avoiding unnecessary waste.
Recommended Tips for Staying Hydrated and Using Water Wisely:
- Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty.
- Carry a reusable water bottle when spending time outdoors.
- Pay extra attention to children, older adults and anyone participating in outdoor activities, as they may require additional hydration.
- Water lawns and landscapes during the early morning or evening hours to reduce evaporation.
- Check irrigation systems for leaks, broken sprinkler heads and overspray.
- Avoid overwatering by adjusting irrigation schedules based on weather conditions.
- Use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways, sidewalks and patios.
“Heat waves often bring increased water demand throughout our community,” said PWD Commissioner Andrew Bader. “By combining healthy hydration habits with responsible water use, residents can help ensure they are meeting their family’s needs while reducing unnecessary water waste. Small changes can make a meaningful difference, especially during extended periods of hot weather.”
The District also notes that staying ahead of water-related maintenance can improve efficiency throughout the summer. Homeowners are encouraged to inspect outdoor faucets, hoses and irrigation systems regularly to identify leaks that may otherwise go unnoticed.
“Simple maintenance checks can go a long way during the summer months,” said PWD Commissioner Michael Chad. “Addressing leaks promptly, watering efficiently and being mindful of daily water use helps residents conserve water while keeping their homes and landscapes in excellent condition. These are easy habits that benefit both homeowners and the community.”
