Simple Steps Can Help Residents Save Water, Lower Costs and Protect Local Resources
As temperatures rise and pool season gets underway, the Plainview Water District (PWD) is encouraging residents to take a proactive approach to pool maintenance and water conservation this summer. Through its ongoing Preserve Plainview initiative, the District is sharing practical tips to help homeowners reduce water waste, improve efficiency and enjoy a sustainable swimming season.
“Every summer, pools become a centerpiece of family gatherings and outdoor fun throughout our community,” said PWD Commissioner Marc Laykind. “By adopting a few smart maintenance habits, residents can significantly reduce unnecessary water use while still enjoying everything their pool has to offer. Conservation starts with simple choices that make a meaningful difference.”
Whether you’re filling a pool for the season or maintaining water levels throughout the summer, following a few best practices can help conserve water and prevent costly mistakes.
Recommended Tips for Filling and Maintaining Pools:
- Check for any holes, cracks or leaks in the pool liner before filling.
- Never leave a pool unattended while it is being filled. Someone should remain present at all times to prevent overfilling and respond quickly in case of an emergency.
- Never leave a pool filling overnight.
- Keep pools covered when not in use. A properly fitted pool cover can reduce evaporation and help retain hundreds of gallons of water each month.
- Add pool chemicals only after the pool is filled and follow manufacturer guidelines carefully. Proper chemical balance helps avoid unnecessary draining and refilling.
- Install and maintain a hose connection vacuum breaker to help prevent water flow reversal and protect the public water supply.
- Always prioritize safety by ensuring pools are properly fenced and equipped with a functioning pool alarm.
“Preventing water loss is one of the easiest ways homeowners can save both water and money during the summer months,” said PWD Commissioner Andrew Bader. “Simple actions such as covering your pool, checking for leaks and maintaining proper chemical levels can have a significant impact on your utility costs while supporting our community-wide conservation efforts.”
PWD also reminds residents that installing an in-ground or above-ground pool comes with important responsibilities. Before beginning any installation project, homeowners should obtain all necessary permits and ensure compliance with local regulations and safety requirements. All pools must include a recirculation and filtration system, and homes must have a double check valve installed on the incoming water line to help prevent contamination of the public water supply.
“A well-maintained pool is a more efficient pool,” said PWD Commissioner Michael Chad. “Investing in proper filtration equipment and staying on top of routine maintenance helps extend the life of your pool, improves water quality and reduces the need for unnecessary refills. It’s a smart approach that benefits both homeowners and the environment.”
